The New Orleans Police Department SWAT Team on Tuesday morning was talking to a man armed with a knife who barricaded himself inside a Canal Street apartment building.

Officers were called about 5 a.m. to the Volunteers of America’s Duvernay Residence, 1801 Canal St., and spoke to a woman who said she and her ex-boyfriend got into an argument that turned physical.

The 38-year-old man threw bleach on the woman and threatened to kill her with a knife, said Officer Hilal Williams, a Police Department spokeswoman.

The victim was able to break away from the man and call police.

After police arrived, the man barricaded himself inside his apartment and threatened to kill himself.

Negotiators were speaking with him late Tuesday morning, Williams said.

Riverbound Canal Street remained opened as the discussions continued, but lakebound Canal was closed between South Claiborne Avenue and South Roman Street.
