A man was shot near the corner of Canal Street and Elk Place around 12:20 p.m. on Monday afternoon, witnesses and police said.

One nearby construction worker, who would only give his name as “Cajun,” said he heard four shots ring out then saw one man running upriver on Elk Place, being pursued by another.

“It looked like he was hit, but he was trucking,” the witness said.

The man said the shooting reminded him of another one around the block on Rampart Street in February, which also occurred in broad daylight.

“This block here is exciting,” the witness said.

Police said the victim was taken in a private vehicle to University Medical Center.
