A New Orleans police officer has been suspended after authorities said he sent threatening emails to his ex-wife.

The officer, Chris Durning, an eight-year veteran of the NOPD, was arrested by Jefferson Parish authorities on counts of cyberstalking and violating a protective order.

Durning turned himself in to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday. The Sheriff’s Office contacted the NOPD’s Public Integrity Bureau, and Durning was placed on emergency suspension without pay.

The protective order had forbidden Durning from having any kind of communication with his ex-wife, police said.

Durning’s ex-wife, in her petition for divorce, accused Durning of abusing alcohol, harassing her and making “verbal threats after he has had too much to drink.”
