Gretna police arrest two suspected in fraud case
Two people suspected of creating and using fake checks across the metro area were arrested Monday in Gretna.
Authorities had been searching for Harold James, 53, and Shanta Jackson, 32, since May after they began an investigation into forgery claims in Jefferson, Orleans and Plaquemines parishes, said Gretna Police Deputy Chief Anthony Christiana.
Gretna police officers on Monday received information that James and Jackson were staying at a hotel in the 1400 block of Claire Avenue. They stopped James as he got into his car and tried to drive away.
James gave officers the key to the room where he was staying. They found Jackson inside the room with blank check paper, a printer, a computer and a disc that showed how to print checks.
Officers also found checks printed with various companies’ names on them, checks from an undisclosed state office and a stamp with the signature of an undisclosed elected state official, Christiana said.
Officers found check stubs from the state office that indicated that several of them had already been cashed.
James was booked with 10 counts of forgery, four counts of monetary instrument abuse and possession of marijuana, as well as on warrants from the Jefferson Parish and Plaquemines Parish sheriff’s offices for monetary instrument abuse and a warrant issued by U.S. marshals for tax evasion.
Jackson was booked with 10 counts of forgery, four counts of monetary instrument abuse, possession of marijuana and a warrant issued by U.S. marshals on a tax-evasion charge.
Authorities said they expect to book James and Jackson on additional charges as the investigation continues.
