Algiers pastor arrested for decades-old rape of young girl _lowres

Sherman Smith

The 56-year-old pastor of a Marrero church was arrested on Wednesday morning for the alleged decades-old rape of a five-year-old girl.

A woman now in her mid-20s came forward to police in October to allege that Sherman Smith sexually assaulted her when she was five, according to an arrest warrant. New Orleans Police Department Detective Bianca DeIrish wrote in the warrant that she had subsequently identified two other juvenile victims during an investigation.

Smith allegedly raped the victim who first came forward in the master bedroom of his house in the 400 block of Park Street in Algiers.

Secretary of State records identify Smith as a reverend at the Second Highway Baptist Church, in the 1500 block of Haydel Drive in Marrero. A call to the church on Thursday afternoon went unanswered.

Smith has been booked on counts of aggravated rape, sexual battery, molestation of a juvenile or disabled, and two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile. A judge set his bond at $180,000 on Wednesday, and he remains in the Orleans Parish jail.
