A team of seventh-graders from Audubon Charter School in New Orleans took first place in the Southeast Regional Middle School Debate Tournament hosted by the Crescent City Debate League at Tulane University. Montessori students Anisha Mohapatra, Haydn Payne and Emma Pierce won the championship round on stage at Dixon Hall against a team from Colorado.

In all, Audubon Charter sent six teams, comprising 16 students, to the tournament April 9. Of 12 participating schools, Audubon won fifth place. The six Audubon teams won 17 of their 31 rounds.

Three Audubon teams were in the top 20 of the 32 participating teams. The team of Kirsten Jones, Nyela Joshua and Jaylon Long was seventh; and the team of Colette Acosta, Lillian Champagne and Michael Zengel was 14th.

Also, three of the Audubon speakers were in the top 10 of the 92 speakers at the tournament. They are Emma Pierce, fourth; Anisha Mohapatra, sixth; and Haydn Payne, seventh.
