At its 20th anniversary luncheon Thursday at the Sheraton Hotel on Canal Street, the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation honored two New Orleans police officers killed this year in the line of duty.
Officer Daryle Holloway was shot to death June 20 while he was taking a suspect to Orleans Parish Prison. Officer Vernell Brown Jr. was hit by a car on U.S. 90 on July 13 when he stopped to investigate a vehicle fire. He died July 17.
Also at Thursday’s event, the group presented its Corporate Responsibility Award to Rick Haase, president of Latter and Blum, and Gregg Lassen, vice president of business affairs at the University of New Orleans, for their work in creating a new police training academy on the UNO campus.
