The two men accused of shooting and killing a cab driver in Gretna last year will be tried separately, Jefferson Parish prosecutors said in a court hearing Thursday.
Ivory Warren, 19, of New Orleans will go to trial first for second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, followed by Jonah Brown, 18, of Westwego, who is charged with the same two counts as Warren plus conspiracy to obstruct justice.
Warren and Brown are accused of shooting 55-year-old Blake Helmer in April 2014 shortly after getting into his cab near Hancock and Rupp streets. Investigators believe Warren and Brown demanded money from Helmer but shot him before he could hand anything over.
Jordan Nibbs, 23, of Marrero has also been charged with accessory to second-degree murder, conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice, though it is not clear whether he will be tried along with Brown.
The trials will be heard by Judge Stephen Enright in 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna. No trial dates have been set.
