All St. Charles Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish government offices, Catholic and public schools are closed through Wednesday, as a winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Parish officials warn that worsening storm conditions are expected for late Tuesday, with forecasts predicting that one-tenth of an inch of freezing rain and ice could accumulate. Hard freezes are expected overnight Tuesday and Wednesday that could impact the region through early Thursday, and overnight wind chills could bring temperatures into the single digits, officials said.

Drivers are being asked to stay off roads until conditions improve.

Though Louisiana State Police say they don’t plan to close the Hale Boggs Bridge on Interstate 310, parish officials warn that could change. “There is no guarantee that the bridge will stay open. It is likely that offramps and other bridges and overpasses in the area will be shut down due to icing,” St. Charles Parish spokeswoman Renee Allemand Simpson said in an email Tuesday. By noon Tuesday, a single lane of the bridge was closed in both directions.

The River Parishes Transit Authority bus service is closed.
