Eight people attack men walking in Quarter

Eight people in a group attacked and robbed three men Wednesday night in the French Quarter, New Orleans police said.

Shortly after 10 p.m., a 21-year-old man was walking in the 1000 block of Gov. Nicholls Street when the eight people approached him. One of them pulled out a gun and robbed the man of his cellphone.

Once the victim gave up his phone, the gunman reportedly told others in the group to “go get them,” referring to two other men walking down the street.

Those two men, 21 and 43, then were approached by three men from the group of eight. One of the three stabbed the 43-year-old in the chest, and all the suspects fled the scene without saying anything.

The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital. Police did not provide any information on his condition.

JP grand jury indicts man on murder charge

A Jefferson Parish grand jury has indicted an 18-year-old Marrero man on a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of his cousin in September.

Ahmad Wiley, who also was charged with one count of obstruction of justice, is accused of firing the bullet that struck Alontay Simmons, 17, of Waggaman, on Sept. 11.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, which arrested Wiley the following day, said he told investigators that he and Simmons had planned to rob two men who approached them to buy a cellphone in the 2800 block of Mount Kennedy Drive in Marrero.

Wiley and Simmons allegedly pulled guns on the men and began firing when the men fled. Witnesses said Wiley and Simmons fired at least six shots, one of which hit Simmons in the chest, killing him.

According to the indictment handed up Thursday, Wiley tried to hide a handgun after the shooting, resulting in the obstruction of justice charge.

The case will be heard by Judge June Berry Darensburg.

Wiley is being held on $850,000 bail.

Smoldering battery charger causes smoke

Firefighters located and removed a smoldering battery charger from the Louisiana Heart Hospital on Wednesday morning after an employee, responding to a report of smoke in a storage room, found the item on fire and put it out with a fire extinguisher.

St. Tammany Fire District No. 3 in Lacombe received a report of a commercial fire alarm at 6:30 a.m., and it was soon upgraded to a commercial structure fire. Because of the hospital’s high patient load, Fire Chief Patrick Sicard requested aid from Mandeville Fire District No. 4.

The areas of the hospital near the storage room were evacuated until smoke and fumes were cleared.
