Three Jefferson Parish men were arrested on cockfighting charges on New Year's Day after the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office broken up a group of 40 people watching an active fight.

Around 1 p.m. Thursday, PPSO said deputies received a complaint of a crowd possibly involved in a cockfight in the 140 block of Perry Lane in Buras. When deputies arrived they saw nearly 40 people in a wooded area watching a fight. The spectators fled when the deputies arrived.

A pit used as a fighting ring, a wounded rooster with spurs on its legs, three caged roosters and 15 sets of spurs were found, PPSO said.

The three men arrested are Khoa T. Nguyen, 30, 2508 Wyoming Drive, Marrero; Son K. Bui, 29, 2844 Sprig Drive, Marrero; and Phuong H. Lam, 29, 2225 New Orleans Avenue, Harvey.

Plaquemines Parish Animal Control took the live birds found at the scene.
