The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $119 million contract for widening parts of the Florida Avenue Canal in New Orleans.
The project is part of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, known as SELA.
The contract, for $117 million with an option for an additional $2 million, went to Boh Bros. Construction Co.
The expected completion date is October 2018.
The project, known as SELA 20, will be completed in two parts and calls for widening of the Florida Avenue Canal from Piety Street to Mazant Street and from St. Ferdinand Street to Piety Street.
The existing canal will be removed and replaced with either a flume — an open-air channel — or a covered canal.
The work includes associated drainage work and utility relocations required for construction. In addition, drainage improvements will be extended to the lower-lying areas of Desire Street and Montegut Street.
SELA involves billions of dollars of drainage improvements to reduce the risk of damage due to rainfall flooding in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes.
