The St. Bernard Parish Library’s annual summer reading program kicked off May 31 with the themes “On Your Mark. Get Set … READ!” for pre-readers through fifth-graders; “Get in the Game” for sixth- through 12th-graders; and “Exercise Your Mind” for adults.
Readers of all ages can register at the library’s Chalmette Branch, 2600 Palmisano Blvd.; the first 100 families who sign up receive a Super Summer Reader Yard sign.
Weekly story programs will be held at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays.
Special guests will make appearances at the library at 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, and a variety of artists will share their talents during the library’s Fridays with the Arts performances at 3 p.m. on Fridays.
On Thursday, Ronald McDonald will be at the library, and on Friday the Sock Rockerz will entertain patrons, who are encouraged to wear their wildest socks and get ready to rock.
Funding for the popular Fridays with the Arts series comes from a grant by the Louisiana Division of the Arts in the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council.
St. Bernard Parish Library readers also have the opportunity to win prizes by completing game sheets. Pre-readers through 12th-graders who finish the sheets by July 14 will be entered for a chance to win a prize during the library’s grand finale prize drawing on July 15.
Younger readers will receive a certificate of completion, along with McDonald’s coupons. Older readers will receive McDonald’s coupons and a magnetic bookmark, while supplies last. Adult readers can turn in completed activity sheets through July 30, and they also will receive McDonald’s coupons with a magnetic bookmark, while supplies last, and their names will be entered into a prize drawing set for Aug. 2.

A fundraiser will be held this weekend for members of local classic rock cover band Hit N Run to help them recoup their losses after $19,000 of their equipment was stolen in January.
Musicians United, a fundraiser for Hit N Run, is set for Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lacy’s Cue Sports Bar, 701 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette. The event, open to all ages, will include live music by Hit N Run, Euphoria, NOLAfied, The Instigators, Rock Kandy and At Fault. There also will be a parade of prizes, silent auction, pool tournament and activities for children.

Sunday music series
Christ Lutheran Church’s next installment in its Sunday Music Series will take place Sunday at 3 p.m. at the church, 3300 Jupiter Drive in Chalmette.
Organist Jieun Yun will present a recital of varied organ works. Jieun, a South Korea native, is studying for her music arts doctorate in organ performance at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. She is an accomplished musician on organ and piano.

Antique auto cruise nights
The St. Bernard Rod Knockers’ monthly cruise night will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of The Palms Casino, 8001 W. St. Bernard Highway in Arabi.
Cruise nights are held the second Saturday of every month. Participation is open to all makes and models of antique, muscle and modified cars.

The Antique Auto Club of St. Bernard’s monthly Cruise Night will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. June 18 in the parking lot at Brewster’s Restaurant, 8751 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.
A car of the month will be named, and food will be available in Brewster’s. There also will be prizes and a raffle.
The club holds a Cruise Night on the third Saturday of every month in the parking lot. Membership in the club is open to owners of classic and antique cars, as well as those who have an interest in them.

Dads looking for a great way to spend Father’s Day weekend with their children can participate in the Knights of Nemesis 11th annual Hook a Kid on Fishing Rodeo set for June 18 at Campo’s Marina at Shell Beach in eastern St. Bernard.
Registration and fishing pole distribution opens at 10 a.m., and the scales will be open from noon to 3 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for children 12 and younger, and $25 for adults; they are available at Picou-Fradella Construction, 8331 Lafitte Court, Chalmette; Stitches Ink, 908 W. Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette; and Hook & Line, 2915 Paris Road, Chalmette.

The St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Business Expo will showcase goods and services of local businesses to potential customers and allow networking to build business relationships.
Set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 25 in the Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center grand ballroom, 8245 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette, the Business Expo will feature about 70 businesses from St. Bernard Parish and the surrounding area.
Visitors also will have an opportunity to sample local fare from restaurants. Admission is free.
