A 51-year-old Slidell man was killed in a crash on Interstate 10 at Gause Boulevard in Slidell Tuesday night, officials said.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m., Jay Ouder was driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler on I-10 eastbound on the Gause Boulevard overpass, Louisiana State Police said. Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate that Ouder’s left rear tire and wheel separated from his Jeep. The tire struck an eastbound vehicle and continued across the median into the westbound travel lanes, striking a second vehicle.
After the mechanical failure, Ouder pulled his vehicle onto the right eastbound shoulder. He exited his vehicle and crossed the eastbound lanes and center median, apparently searching for the tire and rim, State Police said. He attempted to return to his vehicle, and as he was crossing back into the eastbound lanes, he was struck by a 2010 Mercedes-Benz 350 driven by Donald Kirkland, 51, of Slidell.
Ouder sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, but blood and breath samples were obtained for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
