HOPELINE FUNDRAISER: An Evening of Cabaret for Hopeline will be held from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Oak, 8118 Oak St., New Orleans. The event will raise money for the Kristin Brooks Hopeline and its program VET2VET, a suicide hotline specifically for veterans. This program not only serves veterans in moments of crisis but helps them as they recover. Performers will include Nell Nolan, Leslie Castay, Mandi Zirkenbach, John Biguenet, Katherine McClain, Amy Alvarez, Sean Patterson and Asia Rainey. Saturday, Oct. 10, beginning at 4 p.m. at Studio Alvarez, 605 Gallier St., New Orleans. Food, wine and beer will be served, with a suggested donation of $20, and 20 percent of art sales will benefit NAMI New Orleans.
HEALTH FAIRS: The Jefferson Council on Aging is holding a series of community health fairs at senior centers throughout the parish this month. Free and open to the public, the fairs will feature health services such as glucose testing, blood pressure screenings, vision tests, hearing tests, flu shots and information on exercise. Refreshments and entertainment plus door prizes and giveaways will be featured. Guest speakers and line-dancing shows will be scheduled throughout the month at each location.
