Elderly Mandeville couple dies in crash
A Mandeville couple died in a crash shortly after 11:30 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 10 eastbound east of the Interstate 59 junction near the Louisiana Welcome Center in St. Tammany Parish.
I-10 westbound was partially closed while an overturned 18-wheeler was removed.
State Police said a 2013 Toyota Corolla, driven by George Wells, 82, was traveling in the right eastbound lane at a slow rate of speed. A 2015 Freightliner 18-wheeler, operated by Bruno Palacios, 36, of Richardson, Texas, was traveling behind the Corolla. For reasons still under investigation, Palacios crashed into the rear of the Corolla.
After the impact, both vehicles entered the center median, causing the Freightliner to overturn partially and block the left westbound lane.
Wells and his wife, Jean Wells, 80, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Palacios was not injured.
Troopers said they were able to determine that all occupants were properly restrained, and they do not suspect impairment.
The crash remains under investigation, with possible criminal charges pending.
