Suspect indicted in N.O. East motel killing

An Orleans Parish grand jury this week indicted a 28-year-old man in a Sept. 4 slaying at a motel in New Orleans East. Calvin Morris faces a charge of second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life prison term if he’s convicted. He was arrested Oct. 12.

A witness identified Morris in the killing of 28-year-old Cornelius Bentley III, according to testimony at a Dec. 9 preliminary hearing by Homicide Detective Robert Barrere.

Bentley was found lying in a pool of blood at Jack’s Motel in the 7700 block of Chef Menteur Highway with a gunshot wound to his head.

Barrere said Morris’s DNA was found on the murder weapon, although the detective admitted under examination that another person’s was, as well.

Orleans Public Defenders staff attorney Sarah Chervinsky sought to probe during last month’s hearing whether the state’s witness, not Morris, might have committed the crime.

“The known witness is the only person who claims that my client committed this crime,” Chervinsky said.

But authorities have emphasized their claim that Morris fled the state after the shooting. Assistant District Attorney Irena Zajickova told Criminal District Court Judge Franz Zibilich that Morris fled to Texas, where he was arrested and extradited back to Louisiana.

Zibilich set bail for Morris at $1 million.
