To help St. Charles Parish families with the expense of back-to-school supplies, the United Way of St. Charles is partnering with Covenant Church and Blessed to be a Blessing to host a Back-to-School event providing free backpacks, school supplies and hygiene kits to local children.
The Back-to-School event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Covenant Church Youth Center, located at the rear of the church, 1973 Ormond Blvd., in Destrehan. Free backpacks, school supplies and hygiene kits will be distributed to the first 700 participants. A parent or guardian must be present to receive the supplies.
The event also will provide free food, health screenings, giveaways, information and resources. Door prizes also will be awarded, including a laptop computer for a school-age child. For information, call United Way of St. Charles at (985) 331-9063.
Starsteppers to hold Mini Dance Camp
The St. Charles Catholic High School Starsteppers will hold their Mini Dance Camp for girls ages 4 and older from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 3-6 in the St. Charles gym. Campers will have a dance technique class every morning with different dress-up days. On Monday, campers will learn a jazz dance and may dress as a superhero.
Themes by day are: Tuesday they will learn a kick dance and may wear dance clothes; Wednesday they will learn a character dance and dress as their favorite princess; Thursday they will learn a prop dance and should dress in their mini camp T-shirt with blue, white, yellow or black shorts or their Starstepper costume. Parents are invited to watch the campers perform their dances on Thursday, Aug. 3.
The cost of the camp is $50, which includes a camp T-shirt. Registration ends Friday, July 24. Late registration will be accepted on the first day of camp with a late fee of $5.

St. James Theater to present ‘The Addams Family’
The St. James Community Theater will present “The Addams Family” on July 24, 25, 30, 31 and Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter School, 188 West Seventh St., in Reserve. A matinee performance will be at 2 p.m. July 26. The July 24 opening night will include “Dinner and a Show” beginning at 5:30 p.m. and will include a dinner from The Creole House Café.
Reservations must be made and tickets must be bought in advance. Tickets may be purchased at Roussel’s in Gramercy or Allied Express in LaPlace. Tickets are $15 and the box office will accept cash, checks made payable to SJCT and credit cards. Tickets also are available for purchase online at www.stjamestheater.org.

St. John Theatre to hold Children’s Theatre Camp
The St. John Theatre will hold its annual Missoula Children’s Theatre Camp on July 27-31 for children who have completed kindergarten through 12th grade. This year’s production is “Rapunzel,” with performances to be held Aug. 1 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Auditions will be held at 9 a.m. July 27.
