Man arrested in theft of Craigslist scooter

The NOPD arrested 35-year-old Charles Stewart in connection with a scooter theft involving Craigslist.

The scooter was initially reported stolen May 18 from the 2600 block of Chartres Street. The 29-year-old owner told detectives he listed the scooter missing on Craigslist. Later that day, he said, a concerned citizen phoned him, telling him that someone by the name of “Tommy” had an identical scooter for sale on Craigslist.

The victim relayed the information to 5th District detectives.

On Wednesday afternoon, Detectives Bryan Murvey, Brian Baye and Jamaane Roy agreed to meet “Tommy” at Arts and North Rocheblave streets in St. Roch. The detectives all posed as potential buyers for the scooter in the undercover operation.

While on the scene, the detectives saw the white scooter and three men in front of a residence in the 2600 block of North Rocheblave. Also, Tommy, who was later identified as Charles Stewart, answered a phone call that Mulvey placed to the number that the unknown citizen gave to the victim after seeing it on Craigslist.

Based on those facts, the detectives arrested Stewart and booked him on possession of stolen property. The two other men on the scene were not arrested.

The scooter was returned to the victim after he identified it and produced the proper registration.
