May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one local resource for people with a diagnosis of mental illness or emotional disturbance is Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans, with its Mental Health Services and Creative Counseling Services programs.

The Mental Health Services program focuses on each person’s strengths, interests and abilities rather than their disabilities, and assists individuals every step of the way including community coordination with housing, family functioning, education, employment, money management and, of course, mental health resources.

The Creative Counseling Services program offers support, hope and treatment for people in the general community who may be facing particularly difficult life situations.
