Two people were fatally shot within an hour of each other in separate incidents Saturday in New Orleans, police said.

Around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, New Orleans police officers found a 54-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body on a sidewalk in the 2600 block of Dumaine Street, the New Orleans Police Department said in a news release.

The woman died at the hospital, NOPD said. Her name is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Shortly after, officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 400 block of South Salcedo Street. Just before 7:10 p.m., officers found a 23-year-old man on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head.

According to a NOPD preliminary offense log, the victim was leaving his vehicle when two men attempted to rob his friend, who was standing outside the car. One of the suspects allegedly fired two shots as they were leaving the scene, striking the victim.

The man died at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
