Police nab suspects in Canal Street shooting
New Orleans police Thursday arrested two suspects the NOPD said were responsible for a shooting Wednesday night in the 800 block of Canal Street.
Niya Harris, 21, the alleged shooter, and Sade Bardell, 21, an alleged accomplice, were both taken into custody Thursday evening.
They were transported to Central Lockup and booked.
Police said Harris and Bardell were arguing with a woman and her friends about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday when Harris pulled out a gun. Police said Bardell took the gun and began to wave it around. Harris began to make threatening statements and then grabbed the handgun back and opened fire, police said.
The 23-year-old victim was struck one time. Her injury was not serious, police said.
Three more arrested in Slidell restaurant brawl
Wrapping up an investigation into a brawl that included some two dozen people fighting outside a Cheddar’s Restaurant in Slidell’s new Fremaux Town Center shopping center, Slidell police have arrested two more adults and one juvenile, bringing the total number of those arrested to 12.
Amaya Sorrell, 18, of New Orleans and Dominique Porter, 29, of Slidell, were both booked June 10 on counts of disturbing the peace by fighting, according to Slidell police spokesman Detective Daniel Seuzeneau.
A 15-year-old also was booked with the same count, he said.
The incident began after the members of two families exchanged words outside the restaurant. The argument escalated into a large fight, and one woman, 32-year-old Shawn Sorrell, of New Orleans, was booked on five counts of attempted first-degree murder after she allegedly fired a gun into the crowd. No one was seriously wounded. Sorrell also faces two counts of aggravated battery after she allegedly used a stun gun.
Eight others, including a 16-year-old, were booked in a melee that involved 20 to 30 people, Seuzeneau said.
Gunman opens fire on woman in Algiers
A woman was shot in the thigh early Thursday morning in Algiers, New Orleans police said.
The victim and three other people were getting out of a car about 5 a.m. in the 5900 block of Tullis Drive when an unknown man walked out from behind a parked car and opened fire.

Man killed in Algiers collision is identified
A man killed Wednesday afternoon during a collision in Algiers has been identified as Anthony Russell.
Russell, 38, of New Orleans, was riding his 2008 Buell motorcycle east on Gen. de Gaulle Drive about 1:30 p.m. when he hit a 2010 Nissan Altima that was trying to cross the road at Wall Boulevard.
He died at 2:46 p.m. at Interim LSU Hospital, said John Gagliano, the Orleans Parish coroner’s chief investigator.
The driver of the Altima was taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said.
Police did not issue any citations, and the investigation is ongoing.
