De La Salle student earns scholarship

De La Salle High School senior football and track team member Brody Taylor earned one of four scholarships from the Allstate Sugar Bowl/National Football Foundation at its recent 2013 Scholar-Athlete Awards Luncheon at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Thirty-four young men were honored at the luncheon, with four receiving scholarships.

In addition to their athletic ability, the young men were judged on a written essay.

The scholarships were presented by Jay Batt, president of the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Mt. Carmel dance director honored

Gloria Rando Doran, of Arabi, was inducted into the St. Bernard Parish Sports Hall of Fame for her work as the director/moderator of Mount Carmel Academy’s award-winning Carmelettes dance team for the past 37 years. Under Doran’s direction, the Carmelettes have won six national championships and 25 state titles. Doran also teaches American history advanced placement at Mount Carmel Academy.

Certified teachers invited to job fair

Certified teachers are invited to the Eastbank Collaborative of Charter Schools’ annual New Orleans Charter Schools Certified Teacher Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27 in the third-floor ballroom at Xavier University Student Center, 4980 Dixon St.

Full- and part-time positions are available for certified teachers and those who will be certified by May, ECCS President Kathy Riedlinger said.

Candidates who pre-register online at http://www.eastbankcollaborative.com by April 15 should bring their EventBrite ticket for exclusive access for the first hour of the event.

Walk-ins and candidates who register after April 15 are welcome from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pre-registered teachers can have their résumés posted on the collaborative’s website.

Mt. Carmel competes in Classical League

Mount Carmel Academy’s Latin National Honor Society students attended the Louisiana Junior Classical League state convention in February in Baton Rouge.

They won first place for Spirit Contest; T-shirt; Banner; Latin Meter IV test, Aida Hendrickson; Chart, Madi Hannan; Illustrated Quote,Hendrickson; Ink: Madi Hannan; Jewelry, Hannan; Watercolor, Hannah Lampo.

The students won second place for Procession; Girls Tug-of-War; Graphic Arts Individual Sweepstakes,Hannan; Illustrated Quote, Lampo; Ink, Kathleen Castellanos; Pastel, Lampo; Watercolor, Hannan; Latin Meter III Test, Colleen Slade.
