A 31-year-old New Orleans police officer assigned to the Homicide Division was placed under emergency suspension after he was arrested on a count of drunken driving early Sunday morning, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Officer Thomas Ripp, an eight-year veteran, was off-duty and operating an unmarked NOPD vehicle about 5:40 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle at Robert E. Lee Boulevard and Dove Street.

He struck a curb and crashed into a cement light pole, police said.

Ripp was tested for blood-alcohol content, and the results were over the legal limit for driving, police said.

After being treated at a hospital, he was placed under arrest.

The NOPD Public Integrity Bureau immediately placed Ripp on emergency suspension.
