The crew of a Plaquemines Parish vessel pulled an unidentified body from the Mississippi River near Cedar Grove about 8 a.m. Monday.
The body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Authorities have been unable to determine the race or gender of the dead person, but they hope that an autopsy will reveal more.
The body was first spotted by the U.S. Coast Guard about 7:30 a.m. Crew members from the Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District vessel Port Authority I pulled it out of the water a half-hour later.
The Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with information about the person’s identity or death to call (504) 564-2525.
Authorities recently were able to use DNA and a distinctive skull tattoo to identify the heavily decomposed body of Anthony Ferguson, 27, after he was recovered near Port Sulphur.
