The Knights of Columbus Hall in Lakeview was the recent setting for a celebratory send-off and fundraiser for one New Orleans young woman going on a special mission abroad. Sarah Stoehr, 22, is one of three young people selected from the U.S. for a trip to Ireland.
Stoehr, who departs for Ballybofey, Ireland, on Aug. 7, joins a winner from Minnesota and another from Texas for a trip organized by the Christian-based nonprofit NET Ministries. Each August, the international faith initiative selects 150 young Catholics ages 18 to 28 for a nine-month spiritual outreach program that ministers to countries across the globe.
Stoehr will be leaving her family and friends behind and putting her personal career goals on hold to participate in the program.
“I am really looking forward to growing as a person within my faith during this amazing opportunity,” Stoehr said. As Louisiana’s only delegate, Stoehr will work directly with similarly faith-centric youths within the highly Catholic country of Ireland.
The fundraising event was organized with the support of family and friends. Proceeds generated will help offset living expenses during Stoehr’s time abroad.
The party was as much a celebration as it was a fundraiser. The day’s entertainment was provided by none other than the infamous Pfister Sisters. Singer Karen Stoehr, Sarah’s mom, is a member of the beloved vocal ensemble, and the ladies kicked in a show to support young Sarah’s send-off. A very emotional Karen Stoehr shared her thoughts on her eldest daughter’s upcoming journey:
“As a mom, I am so very proud of my daughter for taking one year out of her life to help other youths find purpose and meaning in life through their faith. I hope that through this outreach experience, Sarah returns home with a renewed sense of purpose and meaning in her own life.”
In all, about 300 supporters turned out for a day of great food, door prizes and a raffle, face painting and some of the best entertainment in town. It was a Crescent City send-off to wish Sarah safe travels on her upcoming overseas journey.
