Rodney Jackson (New Orleans Police Department)

Police are seeking a man named Rodney Jackson in an early Sunday ambush shooting in the French Quarter that caused bystanders to jump for their lives and sent one man to the hospital.

Police described Jackson, 22, as a career criminal who had some sort of a disagreement with his 28-year-old victim, who was struck once with a shot in his back that exited through his chest.

A video of the attack shows a man with a limp retrieve a gun from a gray Dodge Dart. When another man gets out of his nearby car, the shooter runs up to attack. Bystanders dodge out of the way during the wild melee, which happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the corner of Bienville and Decatur streets.

“We’re fortunate that there wasn’t any additional people shot,” said NOPD Eighth District Station Commander Jeffrey H. Walls.

Walls said Detective Steve Nolan and others worked around the clock to identify Jackson. After his alleged attack, police said, Jackson dumped his gun in a nearby open vehicle — apparently owned by an unrelated bystander — and fled on foot.

NOPD detectives recovered the video with the help of the nonprofit Project NOLA.
