Advocate photo by DAN LAWTON -- New Orleans Police investigate the scene of a double shooting at the 1300 block of South Salcedo.

A 24-year-old man and a 16-year-old were wounded in a drive-by shooting Saturday in the Zion City neighborhood, according to Officer Hilal Williams, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Police Department.

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of South Salcedo Street about noon.

Williams said two men pulled up in a black SUV and opened fire. The victims were taken to a hospital by private transport. Their condition was not available.

Sixteen neon green cones, which typically mark the location of shell casings, were scattered across the street and the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex early Saturday afternoon.

A tan Chevy Suburban parked inside the crime scene appeared to have blood smeared on the driver’s-side door.

Angela Vaughn, who lives in the neighborhood, said she was sitting in her living room when the gunfire erupted.

“It was a whole lot of shots, a whole lot of shots,” Vaughn said. “I stayed inside. I didn’t want to get no stray bullets.”

Vaughn said the neighborhood is typically quiet. However, she and other neighbors said they heard a volley of gunfire around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Williams could not immediately confirm whether police had received any reports of gunfire Friday night.

Police have not identified any suspects or a motive in the shooting.
