With support from the New Orleans Geology Society, two students from John Curtis Christian High School in River Ridge recently had an opportunity to travel to Maine to research a possible correlation between radioactivity and rare earth elements.

Alexis Lang and Joshua Hartley, and their teacher, Cathy Boucvalt, worked with Al Faster, a former geochemistry professor at UNO who is now a research technologist at the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum in Bethel, Maine. Their project objective is to determine whether Geiger counters can help reduce the cost of finding the best places to mine rare earth elements.
