A six-alarm fire that blanketed part of New Orleans in smokeand forced the closure of historic Canal Street destroyed four businesses by the time it was declared under control shortly before noon Wednesday.

The blaze broke out in a largely empty four-story building at 1016-1022 Canal and spread to an adjacent building. Capt. Edwin Holmes, a New Orleans Fire Department spokesman, identified the businesses in the building as Sweet Sticky Stuff, Diva's Beauty Supply and Cellphone Masters, among others.
