With rumors persisting that Cardell Hayes -- the man jailed in the killing of former Saints player Will Smith -- had worked security for the team, club spokesman Greg Bensel on Wednesday told The New Orleans Advocate that Hayes has never been employed by the organization.

Hayes also never worked for the Pelicans, who are under the same owner as the Saints, Bensel said.

One report on Twitter that Hayes had once worked security for the Saints surfaced the day after Smith's fatal shooting in the Lower Garden District, which occurred late Saturday. That report was apparently then perpetuated by at least a couple of sports websites that are not considered to be a part of the mainstream media.
