Halloween is just around the corner, so to get everyone in the spirit, here are three events planned in our area this weekend.

First, the Kenner North Kiwanis will sponsor its seventh annual Park-A-Boo from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Lafreniere Park, 3000 Downs Blvd., Metairie.

There will be trick-or-treating, a haunted house, games, music, face painting, a maze, food and refreshments. Costume contests will be held each day beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, there will be two contests: at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. And on Sunday, the contest is planned for 3:30 p.m. The entry fee is $5 per person.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children 3 to 12. Children under 3 will be admitted free.

Trunk or treat

Over at Grace Presbyterian Church, 6129 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie, members will host their annual “Trunk or Treat” fall festival on from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be games, prizes and refreshments. Halloween costumes are encouraged.

Finally, another “Trunk or Treat” event, this one sponsored by Tulane-Lakeside Hospital for Women and Children and the Jefferson Parish Library, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday in the parking lot of the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

During the event, children can trick-or-treat among decorated cars in the parking lot. Raffles, a costume contest, a best trunk decorated contest, games, activities, arts and crafts, and face-painting also will be held.

The event is free and open to the public.

Beer-tasting event

The ninth annual “Up on the Roof” beer tasting, sponsored by The Foundation at East Jefferson General Hospital, is at 7 p.m. on Friday atop the Esplanade Garage at the hospital, 4200 Houma Blvd., Metairie.

General admission tickets are $45 per person and patron party tickets are $100 per person. The patron party will begin at 6 p.m.

The event includes more than 100 beers, food from area restaurants, wine and craft cocktails. Proceeds benefit The Foundation at East Jefferson.

Local Scouts help food bank

Thanks to some hard work and generous people, the food pantry at Our Lady of Divine Providence Church and School is a little fatter.

Over the weekend of Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, members of Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops 40361, 40957 and 40130 distributed grocery donated by Winn-Dixie.

Stapled to each bag was a list of needed groceries. The Scouts returned the weekend of Oct. 3 and Oct. 4 to collect the bags and sort the food. Nearly 2,500 pounds of food was collected. Those participating in the event were Ally Anderson, Franchesca Giroir, Jesus Zuniga, Kyle Thibodeaux, Jeannette Stiegler, Gerard Nelson, Stephen Rayle, Brandon Bonvillain, Christopher Rayle, Cassidy Cupit-Burst, Seth Matthews, Stephen Rayle, Kyle Thibodeaux, Michelle Curcuru, Ruth Curcuru, Daniel Taylor, Sherry Taylor, JoAnne Rayle and Joan Thibodeaux.

St. Rita group to meet

The St. Rita Silver Trotters will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the St. Rita School gym, 7100 Jefferson Highway, Harahan.

“We will be celebrating two occasions: the club’s 23rd anniversary and Halloween,” said Louise Chapman, spokeswoman for the group. “And Joe Barbara will be entertaining us with his guitar.”

Chapman added that the club is planning to hold a Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 21 and a Christmas luncheon on Dec. 6. Those attending the meeting will be able to sign-up for both holiday functions will be at this meeting. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

Seafood fest this weekend

The 18th annual Bucktown Seafood Festival is from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday on the grounds of St. Louis King of France Church and School, 1600 Lake Ave., Metairie.

There will be food, refreshments, games and a parade of prizes. Live music will be performed throughout the weekend beginning at 6 p.m. with Category Six at 6 p.m. Then at 7 p.m. on Saturday, New Orleans Karma performs.

At 4 p.m. on Sunday, Imaginary Frenz will perform followed at 6 p.m. by Vince Vance and the Valiants who will close out the festival.

Civil War group to meet

The New Orleans Civil War Roundtable will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Smilie’s Restaurant, 5725 Jefferson Highway, Harahan.

The guest speaker will be Glen Vinet, a local Civil War enthusiast and researcher who will discuss the life of George Ellsworth.

The charge for an optional four-course meal is $25.
