The New Orleans Public Library will provide more than 330 free and fun programs and activities for children, teens and adults through the 2014 summer reading program, May 30 through July 31. This much-loved program is a celebration of reading and is designed to encourage the development of lifelong literacy skills for the citizens of New Orleans by providing them with exciting programs and rewards for reaching reading goals.

To officially begin the summer reading program, kickoff parties are being held at each of the 14 New Orleans Public Library locations. All of the kickoff parties will occur Saturday with the exception of the Martin Luther King and Central City branches, where parties will be Friday. Kickoff party times vary by location, so check the library website for details.

Each of the kickoff parties will celebrate the summer reading program themes; “Fizz, Boom, Read” for children, “Spark A Reaction” for teens, and “Literary Elements” for adults.

For those unable to attend a kickoff party, summer reading program sign-up is available on the library website or at any library location.

The summer reading program is a combination of programs, activities and reading. All of the activities are free, and reading logs are provided to everyone who registers for the program. Participants who reach goals of reading eight books or 800 pages are given prizes. Those participants who record reading 20 books or 2,000 pages are given additional prizes and receive a special bookworm certificate.

New Orleans Public Library programs and events are free.
