A 26-year-old Kenner man was arrested Friday after police say he accidentally shot a woman when he fired a gun in celebration of the New Year.

Around 12:07 a.m. Friday, Kenner police found a woman shot in the abdomen at a housing complex in the 1000 block of 31st Street in Kenner, the Kenner Police Department said in a news release. Brandon Smith, 26, of Kenner, was standing on a second-floor balcony when he allegedly shot several rounds toward an empty lot to celebrate New Year’s. One of the rounds ricocheted off a metal pole and struck the 40-year-old woman in the abdomen as she exited a vehicle, KPD said.

Police obtained a search warrant and found a .380 caliber handgun inside a vent in the apartment where Smith was staying. Police said Smith admitted to shooting the gun in the air in celebration.

The victim was transported to University Hospital. She was treated and released.

Smith was arrested Friday on charges of aggravated battery, negligent injuring and illegal discharge of a firearm. He remains in custody. No bond has been set.
