Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro has decided to drop state drug and weapons charges against Robert Durst, the New York real estate heir and accused murderer who was arrested in New Orleans last month.
Cannizzaro’s office told Criminal District Court Judge Franz Zibilich on Thursday that the DA reserves the right to reinstate the charges against Durst pending the outcome of a federal trial involving similar allegations.
In federal court, Durst has pleaded not guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Both the federal and state charges stem from a loaded handgun and marijuana that investigators said they found in Durst’s Canal Street hotel room when they arrested him.
The charges have delayed Durst’s extradition to California, where he has been charged with murder in the 2000 killing of his onetime friend Susan Berman.
