Chihuahua killed when coffee truck overturns

A truck hauling coffee overturned Wednesday morning while exiting Interstate 12 in Lacombe, according to St. Tammany Fire District No. 3.

The driver of the truck told Fire Chief Patrick Sicard that he had been momentarily distracted by his Chihuahua and drove off the shoulder, turning the 18-wheeler over. The dog died as a result of trauma, Sicard said.

Traffic was diverted as Folgers transferred the load to another 18-wheeler and a tow truck pulled the wrecked vehicle upright.

State troopers and St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s deputies assisted firefighters responding to the accident.

Man, 33, arrested in shooting ex-girlfriend

A man accused of shooting an ex-girlfriend this week was arrested Wednesday by New Orleans police.

Lance Gastinell, 33, was booked on a count of aggravated battery by shooting.

Police said Gastinell approached the 30-year-old woman about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday as she was dropping off a friend at an apartment complex in the 6100 block of Tullis Drive in Algiers. The two began fighting, police said, and Gastinell pulled out a pistol and shot the woman once in the leg.

The victim drove herself to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

Police: Man shot Wednesday morning

New Orleans police Wednesday were investigating the shooting of a man in the St. Claude neighborhood.

The 30-year-old victim was shot several times about 9:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Gallier Street.

Police said the victim was seen talking with an unidentified man, who pulled out a gun and shot the man before fleeing on foot. The victim was taken to a hospital, but the extent of his injuries wasn’t known.

Two pedestrians robbed at gunpoint

Two women were robbed at gunpoint Tuesday in separate incidents, according to New Orleans police.

The first robbery happened before 4 p.m. in the 3400 block of Behrman Highway in Algiers. Police said a 25-year-old woman was walking when three young men — one of them armed — demanded her money.

The second robbery occurred about 11 p.m. in New Orleans East. The 28-year-old victim was walking to the bus stop at Crowder Boulevard and Dwyer Road when two men approached her and robbed her of her purse, police said.
