The fourth annual Kendall Springman Memorial Blood Drive is from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Community Life Center of St. Matthew the Apostle Church and School, 10021 Jefferson Highway, in River Ridge.
The drive is sponsored by the St. Matthew Knights of Columbus Council 13425.
“During Kendall’s four-year battle with leukemia, he used between 300 and 400 units of blood or blood platelets,” Kendall’s father, Keith Springman, said. “And he was just one of hundreds of children, so please donate.”
Kendall died on July 31, 2011.
Last meeting on zoning in Kenner set for Tuesday
The last of the five town hall meetings for Kenner residents to discuss zoning issues surrounding the creation of a new Unified Development Code for the city will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kenner Council Chambers, 1801 Williams Blvd.
The meetings are informal in nature and are designed to foster communication between residents, elected officials and the Kenner administration on zoning matters. Residents can discuss their own personal zoning issues with staff from the Kenner Planning Department and the University of New Orleans’ Planning Division, which is spearheading this project.
In a news release, Kenner’s Planning Director Jay Hebert said the city’s comprehensive zoning ordinance was adopted in 1978 and has been revised more than 130 times in the past 37 years. The ordinance is outdated and the new code is designed to reduce unnecessary zoning procedures and address land uses that may not have existed when the first code was approved in the 1970s.
“Quite simply, the goal is an up-to-date document that is clear and understandable and free of conflicts that could impede development in the city,” Hebert said.

Bonnabel Canal improvements underway
Last month, Jefferson Parish officials broke ground for the Bonnabel Canal Improvements.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held June 22 at the intersection of Claudius Street and Hesper Avenue in Metairie.
The canal improvements will include replacing an existing timber bulkhead with steel sheet pile at the toe of the east bank, clay fill to re-establish the east bank slope and the installation of slope pavement and new fencing.
Parish officials said Hamp’s Construction is performing the work at an estimated cost of $3,969,111 and it should be completed in eight months. Funding is provided by a combination of state capital outlay and parish funds.
