A 6-year-old girl died Monday after the SUV in which she was riding veered off Interstate 10 in New Orleans East and rolled over several times, tossing her from the vehicle, police said.

Although Jawana White was killed, three other girls — ages 6, 9 and 10 — who were in the SUV with her were not harmed, authorities said. They were taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure, said Officer Hilal Williams, a Police Department spokeswoman.

The accident happened a little after noon on westbound I-10 near the Morrison Road exit.

A 36-year-old woman, whom police did not immediately identify, was driving the gray Chevrolet Suburban when she lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons, police said.

Charges against the driver, who was taken to a hospital in stable condition, were pending, police said; they did not specify what those charges might be.

Jawana died on the way to the hospital. An autopsy to determine the cause of her death will be held Tuesday, said John Gagliano, the Orleans Parish coroner’s chief investigator.

The accident closed I-10 westbound at Morrison Road while police looked through the wreckage and later turned the vehicle right side up.

Fatality investigator Kevin Thompson is in charge of the investigation.
