The Coroner’s Office on Sunday identified one of the people who was shot and killed inside a car on Barone Street late Friday.
Jaunice Shine, 24, died inside a silver car on Baronne near Second Street, New Orleans City Coroner Dr. Jeffrey C. Rouse said in a news release.
A 17-year-old boy also was shot in the car. He died at University Hospital, Rouse said. He will release the name of that victim after the family has been notified.
Officers found the victims about 11:35 p.m. Friday when they answered a call about an accident. They found the pair inside a silver vehicle that had hit a parked car.
On Saturday morning, neighbors said police were looking for a man who might have been connected to the shooting.
“They said they were looking for some black guy,” said Wilfred “Eddie” Reardon, 70.
Reardon said he was walking down the street about midnight after visiting a friend in the area when he saw several police lights and stopped to see what was going on. “It looked like Carnival or something,” he said.
Several neighbors who live on Second Street near Baronne said they didn’t hear any gunshots.
One woman, who declined to give her name, said she thought the shots might have been fired inside the car because otherwise she would have heard them from her house.
She added that her sister-in-law, who lives closer to Baronne Street, reported hearing five shots but that police told her there were closer to 10.
Rico Smith, 25, said the area doesn’t see much violence.
“I was surprised that it happened,” Smith said. “It’s very sad.”
