LEARNING CHINESE: Xiong Jun, of China, has been awarded a fellowship from the U.S. Department of State to participate in the 2014 Teachers of Critical Languages Program. She will teach Chinese for a full academic year at Audubon Charter School in New Orleans. Audubon Charter School participated in a nationwide competition to host a TCLP teacher, and Xiong is one of just 22 teachers who have been selected from China and Egypt for participation in TCLP.
TCLP is designed to increase the study and acquisition of important world languages in U.S. schools. This program enables primary and secondary schools to strengthen their teaching of critical languages by bringing Egyptian and Chinese teachers to the U.S. to teach Arabic and Chinese language for an academic year.
In addition to teaching their native languages, TCLP exchange teachers expand the understanding of the world in their U.S. host communities by establishing strong ties with teachers, students, parents and members of the community, and by sharing information about their home countries and cultures.
FREE ONLINE CALCULUS CLASS: Louisiana public and charter school students can register for a free Advanced Placement calculus class taught by Michael Masterson, of Benjamin Franklin High School, through the Louisiana Supplemental Course Academy, formerly “Course Choice.” Students at private schools are welcome to take the course but must pay for it.
The College Board offers both Calculus AB and Calculus BC exams, with the broader Calculus BC exam meant for students who want to place out of a comparable college calculus course. Many schools are not able to offer a BC class because of limited demand.
Masterson teaches the regular face-to-face AP Calculus BC class at Franklin, and online students will have regular opportunities to meet with him at Franklin on Saturdays. The meetings are optional and the course may be taken completely online. For information, visit www.edline.net/pages/bfhsla/Departments/Online_Education or send email to email@example.com.
SCHOLARSHIPS: The Louisiana Capitol Federal Credit Union has awarded $500 scholarships to three New Orleans students: JeBari Lewis, of L.B. Landry-O.P. Walker High School; D’Andrea E. Opara, of Ursuline Academy; and Dean Scott, of Holy Cross High School.
Each year, the Louisiana Capitol Federal Credit Union awards scholarships to eligible Louisiana high school seniors who are improving their lives by furthering their education and who have shown commitment to their credit union and their community.
