A Harvey man was booked for second-degree cruelty to a juvenile after a 3-month-old child was sent to the hospital in critical condition with shaken baby syndrome on Wednesday.
Jeffery Lebouef Jr., 24, is accused of injuring the baby boy because he did not believe the child was his son, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office arrest record.
A doctor at Children’s Hospital said the boy appeared to be suffering from brain injuries when he was brought there by Lebouef and the child’s mother. Both parents initially denied knowing how the baby suffered his injuries, according to Detective Nicholas Vega.
Back at the JPSO Investigation Bureau, Lebouef eventually admitted to dropping the victim off the bed, causing him to strike his head on the floor, and then dropping him again into his bassinet, according to the arrest record.
The mother told deputies that when she asked Lebouef what had happened, he grew angry and denied that he had done anything to injure the victim. She also told authorities that he had animosity toward the child because he did not believe the baby was his.
Confronted with this information, Vega wrote, Lebouef confessed that he became angry when the baby would not stop crying.
Lebouef is being held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center, according to court records.
