A fatal accident and fire involving a tanker truck early Friday may have been caused by a woman driving the wrong way down North Claiborne Avenue who fled the scene after the accident, authorities believe.

Police arrested the woman at her home, according to nola.com, which quoted New Orleans Fire Department Capt. Edwin Holmes. It is unclear what charges she faces.

Holmes told nola.com that the woman was driving a dark SUV and collided with the tanker at around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Franklin and North Claiborne avenues. The wreck gave the tanker a flat tire, causing the driver to lose control, after which he crashed into a sign in a nearby gas station parking.

The truck exploded, killing the driver. Authorities have not released the driver’s name.

The woman fled, Holmes told nola.com.

Police evacuated some homes in the area, but residents were allow to return home just before 6 a.m.

Authorities have scheduled a news conference for 10:30 a.m.
