A New Orleans man was sentenced to 30 months in prison Thursday for a four-year embezzlement scam in which he skimmed $1,798,000 from his employer’s payroll to pay off his casino debts, according to a release from the office of U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite.

U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown sentenced Paul Gardner, 57, to the prison term and ordered him to pay the money back to his former employer, Clovelly Oil.

Gardner used his position as a part-time bookkeeper to divert a cut of the biweekly payroll to himself.
