An anonymous donor has given $1 million to Loyola University New Orleans to establish an endowed chair honoring the late Rev. Emmett M. Bienvenu.

Bienvenu

was a longtime Jesuit scholar of Latin and Greek language and literature and taught for more than 40 years.

“Father Bienvenu introduced me to ancient Greek, which has been a big part of my life for nearly 40 years,” the donor said. “This donation recognizes my debt to him and to Loyola.”

The new endowment will allow the Classical Studies department to study and research the ancients, according to Loyola. By studying how the ancients thought about the nature of what it means to be human, students are better able to understand how to do so in the present.
