Car crash claims life of Kenner woman

A two-vehicle crash Friday morning on Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish took the life of Yvonne Gooch, 66, of Kenner, State Police reported.

Their investigation revealed that 56-year-old New Orleans resident Antonio Zapata was traveling eastbound on I-10 in a 2007 Toyota Sequoia shortly after 8 a.m.

As he crossed the La. 415 overpass, his left rear tire blew out.

Zapata lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median into the westbound lanes, where Gooch was driving a 1999 Lexus RX 300. Zapata’s vehicle struck Gooch’s vehicle on the driver’s side, causing it to overturn twice.

Although Gooch was wearing a seat belt, she suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Zapata received minor injuries; his six passengers also received minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals.

While impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, upon his release from the hospital, Zapata will be booked on counts of negligent homicide, careless operation, child restraint violations and having no insurance, State Police said.
