Fire destroyed an abandoned 7th Ward home and damaged two occupied homes Thursday afternoon.
The New Orleans Fire Department received a report of a fire in the 1800 block of Duels Street about 2:25 p.m.
Firefighters arrived to find a one-story home with flames coming out of the roof.
They struck a second alarm five minutes later because it appeared neighboring homes were at risk of burning as well, said Capt. Edwin Holmes, a Fire Department spokesman.
Forty-five firefighters had the fire under control at 3:15 p.m.
One neighboring home received severe fire damage to its back half, while the rest of the building had considerable smoke and water damage, Holmes said.
The other neighboring home had fire damage to the back.
Firefighters rescued two dogs from an apartment inside one of the occupied homes. No people were at home at the time the fire began, and no injuries were reported.
The home where the fire began had been abandoned since Hurricane Katrina and its utilities were not hooked up, the NOFD said. The cause remains under investigation.
