The City Council could vote Thursday to begin a process that could see the statute of the lone president of the Confederacy removed from the Mid-City landscape.

And if Mayor Mitch Landrieu has a say in the matter, additional monuments to Civil War-era leaders and incidents could also come down.

District B Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell authored a resolution asking the Human Relations Commission, a city agency that examines complaints about discrimination, to "undertake a review of the Jefferson Davis monument and to make recommendations to the Council concerning the appropriateness of the public display of the monument."
