Kenner’s Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council will sponsor a coed cabbage ball tournament beginning at 9 a.m. on June 21 at Muss Bertolino Playground, 620 W. Esplanade Ave., Kenner.

The event will include middle and senior high school divisions as well as an adult division. The cost is $100 for a 10-member team. Two more team members can be added for $10 per person.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the purchase and renovation of playground equipment at Veterans Park in Kenner.

The council is composed of 20 area high school students who are Kenner residents. The aim of the group is to give ideas and provide feedback to the Kenner City Council and Kenner Mayor Mike Yenni on issues of importance to the city.

Piano recital at library

Patrick McArdle and Patrick Fanning, two students at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will give a piano recital at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

The students will perform several pieces by Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Scriabin, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Debussy.

The program is free and open to the public.

Mental health resources

A recovery and wellness fair for adults living with mental illness and their families will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

The fair, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness — New Orleans. There will be guest speakers and information on housing, education and employment, peer support, free health screenings, and health information and resources

AARP driving courses

Two AARP Smart Driver courses are planned for next month.

The first course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 7 at East Jefferson General Hospital, 4200 Houma Blvd., Metairie.

The second course is planned for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 19 at the Elmwood Fitness Center, 1200 S. Clearview Parkway, Harahan.

The cost for either class is $15 per person for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. Those completing the course will receive a certificate that may qualify them for a discount from their automobile insurer good for up to three years.

Farmers market this weekend

A reminder that the first and third Saturdays of every month, the Rivertown Farmers Market in Kenner is open from 8 a.m. to noon. The market includes locally grown fruits and vegetables, eggs, homemade cheeses, preserves and Italian pastries.

Grant Cheramie, of Woodcrafts and More, will be on hand Saturday to sharpen kitchen knives.
