New Orleans Saints mega-fan Larry Rolling, famous for his clever signs in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome stands, appeared outside New Orleans Civil District Court on Wednesday in support of owner Tom Benson.
The sign he brought along reads, "Mr. B WE SUPPORT YOU Finish Strong. (Signed) The Fans." The 't' in 'Strong' is, of course, a fleur-de-lis.
"I feel like the timing for this was right now," Rolling said, on the third day of Benson’s mental competency trial. "I feel like the fans haven't had their voice heard in this. And this is what they're thinking. That's my vibe anyway."
A Saints season-ticket holder since 1978, Rolling is renowned among Who Dats for making evocative signs and bringing them to the games. The Covington city councilman owns an embroidery and screen printing business.
Rolling's most-photographed signs include one made during the Saints' Super Bowl season that read "Destiny," with the "T" being a fleur-de-lis. Another was "Home Sweet Dome," which Rolling had when the Saints beat the Falcons on the night the Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.
“Mr. Benson, we’re here to support you,” Rolling told Benson as he left the courtroom Wednesday for a lunch break. “The fans support you.”
Benson, taking Rolling’s hand, said, “Thank you.”
