A New Orleans police officer was injured during a shooting on Friday afternoon.

Officer Kenneth Gill, an 11-year veteran of the force assigned to the 1st District, was hit by a piece of shrapnel or glass, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation. Gill was working a security shift at the Columbia Parc housing development in Gentilly.

He was responding to a shots-fired call in the area of 3900 Hamburg Street when he was ambushed by one or more suspects, according to a Police Department news release.

An unidentified male was shot and killed as the suspect or suspects fled the area, possibly heading towards Metairie on the interstate.

The officer did not fire his weapon and was transported to a hospital.
